Gone but not forgotten

“But why?”

Bones looked into Nyota’s dark soulful eyes and couldn’t come up with an answer.

“Lee, why are you doing this? Is it me? Did I do something --”

“No! It’s just… I’m not what you need.” He threw in the last of his belongings and zipped up his bag. “What is that supposed to mean?”, Nyota wasn’t letting him off that easy. “Things have been going so well, now all of a sudden it’s over?! Is there someone else?”

He turned to look at her. “No, there’s no one else, but you have so much more to experience in your life. I can’t stand in your way.”

Nyota was shell-shocked. She didn’t know what to do. McCoy picked up his bag and headed for the door, hesitating slightly as his eyes met Nyota’s briefly.

Then he was gone.

Uhura was standing alone in her quarters as the tears came streaming down her cheeks. She was barely aware of the warmth from them slipping down her cheeks as she stood alone in the empty room.

It was a beautiful ship. No denying it. Uhura really felt at home here, in her new quarters where she was busily making it feel like home. She’d been on the ship for almost a week and the place had been really driving her nuts.  Now that the place felt more like her room, she began to relax.

Then the computer went off, “Lieutenant. Uhura. Report to sickbay”. She had forgotten about her mandatory check-up. May as well get it over with, she thought. So she headed off to sickbay.

She entered the sickbay and was immediately taken aback by the figure standing across from her at the table assembling his hypo-sprays.

He could feel someone looking at him, but when he looked up he wasn’t expecting the familiar face looking  back at him.

“what are you doing here?” McCoy asked as he walked towards his former flame, closing the space between them. “Reporting for my check-up. Are you … are you working on the Enterprise?”

“Yeah, I’m CMO. And you’re one of the senior bridge crew. I knew you were going places.”

That familiar all knowing smile appeared across his features and everything came flooding back. All the emotions, (the love and the passion when they were together, all the heartache and anger when he was gone), that she had suppressed all those years ago were suddenly all she could think of. Looking into his baby blue eyes made her weak at the knees.

“Er, well, shall we get your check-up over with?” he asked her as he extended his hand to motion her to the sickbed.

She didn’t know how but she managed to find the strength to walk over to the bed and keep her composure throughout the entire exam.

When she got back to her quarters, she broke down in tears.

She hadn’t moved on after all.
